The model 37 is a perfect canvass for the engraver's art. This John Browning design is without a side ejection port which gives the engraver a large unencumbered canvas.
Game scenes of No. 1 Engravings are incised or "line" engraved . Game scenes for Engravings 2 and 3 are relief engraved. Relief engraving is accomplished by removing the background after the anmals have been incised engraved . Removing the background on a steel canvas is time consuming The eye impact of game animals rising out from the steel is well worth the extra effort.
All scroll on the Ithaca graded guns are deeply cut. The chisels are polished in diamond dust so the cuts reflect the light in a pleasing manner. Most chisel cuts are beveled to the inside to give a modeled or sculped feeling to the entire receiver. This "3D" effect on the Ithaca engraving is not recognizable on the computer monitor and can only be fully appreciated "in the hand"
